State Champions
It was a banner weekend for Albuquerque High athletes this past weekend at the New Mexico Activity
Association State Swimming and Wrestling competitions. Swimming was held at the Academy Complex, while
Wrestling took place at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.
In wrestling, junior Dyon Santiago completed a perfect 36-0 individual record and earned his first state
championship in the 132 pound division. He joins his brother, Jordan Santiago, a 2010 graduate of AHS who
won two individual state titles in his Bulldog career. Also earning bronze medals in state brackets were Mister
Bardo (Heavyweight) and Nick Maldonado (220). Adding to the medal count was senor Adam Baca as he
finished in 5th place at the 126 pound division. Congratulations to Coach Don Lopez for guiding the Bulldogs to
an 8th place team finish. The wrestlers had a great season!
Senior Madison Bridges earned her 7th state individual swim title and leaves AHS as the most decorated
female athlete in school history. Along the way, she won seven gold medals and set four different state records.
She will now take her swimming talents to the University of Missouri, after a quick stop at the Olympic Trials this
summer. Freshman Cassaundra Pino also set a state record in the 100 fly to earn her first ever state crown!
Bridges also brought home a silver and bronze medal this weekend in the 200 Freestyle Relay and 200 Medley
Relay. Felicia Zamora, Meaghan McSorley and Pino rounded out the quartet on those relays. Congratulations
to Coach Jimmy Phillips for leading in the Bulldog girls to an amazing 5th place team finish in state competition.
